HYDROPONICS
We've recently set up a hydroponics grow wall in Mrs. Maggio's room where we can grow produce in school! Members help to maintain the grow wall by managing pH and other nutrients! If you are interested in helping or learning more about how to use hydroponics, you can sign up using this form!

UPCYCLING
The Environmental Club reuses their trash to make colorful murals that you can find throughout the school! Past upcycling projects include the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle mural in the Cafeteria, and the Welcome Families mural in Mrs. Pedrick's room! Repurpose your trash into something useful or beautiful!

ECOFACTS
The Green Team makes Ecofacts to spread environmental awareness within the student body! An ecofact is a fact, often supported by statistical evidence, that explains the negative impacts of common, environmentally-harmful activities, and how we, as both individuals and a community, can tackle them in our daily lives. The theme of the facts differs each year, with a theme of single-use plastics during the pandemic in the 2020-2021 school year. To learn more, click here!

HALLWAY RECYCLING

SEC is responsible for monitoring and overseeing the recycling stations all over the school. We periodically give each station a grade (A,B,C, or F), depending on how well trash is recycled there. Each station has a rubric that explains why that station received the grade it has. The goal is to make every station achieve an A, and to maintain it! Members may do 4 Hallway Duties to make up for 1 cafeteria duty or weekend event. Hallway Duty Form |
Wildlife Rehabilitation
SEC will be hosting study sessions and providing help to students who want to learn about NY state's wildlife and apply to be a licensed wildlife rehabilitator! Students who are 16 and up will be able to take a quick exam and do an interview in order to be able to educate the public about NY's fauna and refer serious wildlife concerns to more experienced rehabbers. It's a great opportunity to get more familiar with NY's ecosystems and the issues that affect local wildlife!

BATTERY URBAN FARM
Throughout most of the school year, we visit our plot of land at the Battery Urban Farm, where we grow a variety of things, including herbs, cucumbers, tomatoes, and more! We spend about an hour weeding, adjusting the poles supporting the plants, picking veggies and herbs, and watering the plants.
BILLION OYSTERS PROJECT
Once a month, we go to Pier 40 to participate in the Billion Oysters Project. We pull up our oyster cage and measure and count the tagged oysters, and monitor them until they are developed enough to be released. BOP aims to restore oysters, a keystone species, to the New York Bay. It's a great opportunity to learn as well as make an impact!
STAPLES RUNS
Got old, used up ink cartridges or toners? Planning to just throw them out into the trash? Here's a better idea: how about recycling them for money? Bring your ink cartridges & toners to the back of room 739! Every month the club will bring the cartridges/toners to Staples. There, Staples will accept each for a couple of dollars while also recycling them for future use. This helps bring the club money as well as protect our environment! |
WEEKEND EVENTS
Every week, the Communications Committee finds events for the club to enjoy! To learn more about these events, go to the events page or click the button to the right.
